A leaker reveals that Samsung is currently working on new cameras for its smartphones. With the specified megapixel value, the company would make a strong statement in the industry.

For many, smartphone cameras are one of the criteria that play a role in the purchase decision. Apple has just given its iPhone 16 Pro its own button to operate the camera. One feature by which smartphone cameras can be measured is the resolution (specified in megapixels) at which they can take photos. And according to the latest reports, Samsung is currently working on smartphone cameras with megapixel values that no other manufacturer has yet delivered.
As leaker Jukanlosreve reports in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Samsung is currently working on camera sensors for its Galaxy devices that can record at 500 megapixels. That would be by far the highest resolution that a smartphone camera can deliver. Android competitors like Xiaomi would definitely have to follow suit to achieve such a megapixel value for their cell phone cameras.

Several manufacturers share first place when it comes to the current best number of megapixels in a smartphone camera. Both the current Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 Ultra as well as the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G from Xiaomi currently offer the highest resolution cameras with a resolution of 200 megapixels.
At this point it must be emphasized that it is not just the megapixel number that determines whether a smartphone camera takes good pictures or not. A higher megapixel count basically means that the camera can capture more detail because the image is made up of more pixels. This can be an advantage for detailed images that later need to be digitally enlarged without loss. However, the megapixel count does not provide any information about the sensor, the image quality in low light or how well the colors are captured.

The leaker does not reveal when Samsung could release smartphones with a cell phone camera with 500 megapixels. According to current information, the Galaxy S25 smartphones that will be released soon will have a main camera with a resolution of 200 megapixels. Therefore, the new mega cameras could be more for the Galaxy S26 series or later models.
But until Samsung officially confirms this information, we shouldn't consider it a certainty just yet. By the way, there were already rumors in 2023 that Samsung was working on a 440 megapixel camera.
